Lumut Port Welcomes State-of-the-Art Heavy Machinery, Boosting Operational Efficiency

On January 23rd, Lumut Maritime Terminal Sdn Bhd (Lumut Port) has ushered in a new era of operational efficiency with the arrival of four state-of-the-art Ship RC Grab machines from China. These powerful additions promise to revolutionise cargo handling, enhancing efficiency and turnaround times for various stakeholders.

So, what exactly are these impressive machines? Lumut Port acquired two Ship RC Grab 12cbm units, featuring a clamshell design ideal for handling bulk materials like aggregates and grains.

They also welcomed two Ship RC Grab 10cbm units, equipped with an orange peel grab, perfect for managing scrap metal and other irregularly shaped cargo. While Lumut Port already utilises clamshell grabs, this marks the first foray into orange peel technology, expanding the port’s versatility.

The RC Grab, which comes with four accompanying trolleys, reflects Lumut Port’s commitment to staying at the forefront of maritime technology. The machines were transported from China to Lumut Port via Port Klang, a journey that took approximately five months from production to delivery.

These cutting-edge machines were supplied by Shanghai Guanbo Machinery Equipment Co. Ltd (SGMC), a leading name in grab manufacturing. Each 12cbm and 10cbm grab unit cost USD41,100, a testament to Lumut Port’s dedication to acquiring top-tier equipment to optimise its operations.

The real game-changer with these new grabs is their remote-control functionality. This allows for faster and more precise operations, translating to a 40% or greater time saving compared to manual grabs.

This efficiency boost has a ripple effect. For shipping companies, the faster loading and unloading times mean reduced vessel idle times, leading to cost savings and improved scheduling. For cargo owners, the efficiency of these machines ensures that goods are handled swiftly and safely, minimising delays and potential damage.

These new grabs aren’t replacing existing equipment but augmenting Lumut Port’s capacity, especially with the upcoming LMT2 terminal. This brings the total number of Ship RC Grab units at the port to 16.

While technologically advanced, these machines require skilled operators. Lumut Port has a team of 14 trained professionals ready to maximise the potential of these grabs. In-house training ensures they are proficient in operating the remote controllers and performing necessary maintenance.

Maintaining these sophisticated machines is crucial. Lumut Port’s Technical Service Department will adhere to a Master Maintenance Plan, conducting monthly preventive maintenance. SGMC will also provide support when needed, including deploying on-site mechanics from China for complex issues.

Looking to the future, Lumut Port is committed to further technological upgrades to facilitate seamless movement of goods for its clients.

“This investment in state-of-the-art grab technology underscores Lumut Maritime Terminal’s commitment to providing world-class port services,” says Lumut Port’s CEO Dato’ Mubarak Ali.

“These new machines are not just about increasing efficiency but they represent a strategic move to enhance our competitiveness, support local businesses and solidify our position as a key player in the region’s maritime landscape.

“We are confident that this investment will bring significant benefits to our customers and stakeholders for years to come.”

The port is exploring further automation and digitalisation initiatives to streamline processes and enhance connectivity, ensuring clients can move their goods easily and efficiently.
