At Lumut Maritime Terminal Sdn Bhd (LMTSB), corporate social responsibility (CSR) is not just an obligation; it’s a fundamental aspect of our identity.
As our CEO Dato’ Mubarak Ali Gulam Rasul aptly puts it, “At Lumut Port, we view CSR as an integral part of our operational excellence. A portion of our profits goes back to the community that has supported the region long before the port’s establishment. These local communities, who played a key role in developing the area around Lumut and Seri Manjung, sometimes need financial or in-kind
support.”
“We believe in the principle that ‘the hand that gives is better than the hand that receives.’ Seeing the joy and gratitude of the people we help strengthens our commitment to assist and grow alongside them. In essence, we consider CSR as a form of ‘shared prosperity,’” he further emphasises.
This philosophy guided us throughout 2024 as we conducted 194 CSR programs, representing 1% of our profit before tax (PBT) dedicated to uplifting local communities. Here, we highlight a few impactful programs that have brought us closer to our neighbours.
A Commitment to Food Security: Hydroponic Farming at Sultan Alang Iskandar Shah Mosque
On 8 November 2024, we inaugurated a hydroponic farming project at Sultan Alang Iskandar Shah Mosque, inspired by the Sultan of Perak’s vision to enhance food security. We contributed three hydroponic farming sets costing RM18,000, aligning with the Majlis Agama Islam & ‘Adat Melayu Perak’s mission to integrate sustainability with community welfare.
Rabani Ashaari, our Environmental Officer, expressed pride in spearheading this initiative: “As an environmentalist, I take pride in supporting my company’s efforts to promote sustainability and demonstrate our commitment to environmental stewardship within the community and to other organizations. I am honoured to be part of a team contributing to the mosque by providing hydroponics to assist those in need in the surrounding area.”
Moving forward, we will monitor the harvest of hydroponic plants monthly, ensuring the initiative delivers lasting benefits.
Supporting Flood Relief in Kampung Lintang and Kampung Lasah
On 27 October 2024, our team extended support to communities devastated by the worst flood since 2014. Floodwaters reached over 1.5 meters, severely affecting 80 families in Kampung Lintang and 52 families in Kampung Lasah. Essential community facilities such as mosques, kindergartens and police stations were also impacted.
In response, we provided five water pressure units worth RM1,000 to facilitate post-flood cleanup efforts. Four dedicated staff members participated in this program, delivering aid and witnessing firsthand the resilience of the affected communities. The locals expressed heartfelt gratitude for our contributions, which eased their recovery process.
This was our first flood relief initiative in 2024, marking a vital step in our ongoing commitment to disaster response and preparedness.
Gotong-royong at Kompleks Pendidikan Manabi’ul Ulum
On 8 October 2024, Lumut Port collaborated with IKM Lumut for a gotong-royong program at Kompleks Pendidikan Manabi’ul Ulum in Batu 10, Lekir. This annual collaboration brought together 15 of our staff, 60 IKM Lumut staff and students to rejuvenate the educational facility.
These collective efforts symbolise the spirit of unity and shared responsibility that underpin our CSR initiatives. As always, we were proud to work alongside dedicated individuals and organizations to make a tangible difference in the community.
Independence Day Donations: Supporting the Asnaf and Indian Communities
In conjunction with Independence Day on 31 August 2024, we provided essential items to 20 Muslim families in Batu 3 Segari and five Indian families in Manjung. Each family received a basket of groceries worth RM100 and RM50 in cash, amounting to a total budget of RM3,750.
These communities, primarily comprising fishermen and labourers, were identified for their financial struggles. This marked the first time they received aid from Lumut Port, and the gratitude expressed by the recipients reaffirmed our commitment to inclusivity and community welfare.
Criteria and Selection Process for CSR Initiatives
Our CSR programs are thoughtfully selected through letters of request from various agencies and local communities. While we strive to accommodate as many requests as possible, contributions are limited to once per year to ensure fair distribution.
Popular initiatives, such as the Van Jenazah contributions, reflect our alignment with the cultural and spiritual values of the community. These programs highlight our dedication to addressing practical needs while fostering goodwill.
A Year of Meaningful Contributions
In 2024, Lumut Port’s CSR initiatives touched countless lives, showcasing our unwavering commitment to shared prosperity. From supporting food security and disaster relief to fostering educational collaboration and aiding underprivileged families, each program reflected our core values and reinforced our bond with the community.
As we look ahead, we remain steadfast in our mission to grow alongside our neighbours, guided by the principle that giving enriches both the giver and the recipient. Together, we will continue building a brighter, more inclusive future for all.
