RM2.8 million community investment earns national recognition as company prepares for 30th anniversary
[2025, July 18] In a glittering ceremony attended by Malaysia’s corporate elite, Lumut Port Sdn Bhd was crowned ‘Company of the Year (Port Operations)’ at the 10th Sustainability & CSR Malaysia Awards last night – a particularly sweet achievement as the port operator prepares to celebrate its 30th anniversary on 24th July.
The Deputy Minister of Women, Family and Community Development Malaysia, YB Datuk Seri Dr. Noraini Ahmad, presented the award to Lumut Port’s Chief Operating Officer Tn Hj Rusly at Berjaya Times Square Hotel, where 65 of Malaysia’s most socially responsible corporations were honoured.
Lumut Port’s winning formula combined substantial financial commitment – totalling RM2,816,850 in 2024-2025 – with innovative programs creating tangible impacts across four key areas. These community initiatives form part of the company’s anniversary celebrations, demonstrating how far the organization has come since its establishment in 1995.
1. Education Revolution
The port operator transformed learning opportunities for Perak’s youth, equipping 15 schools with STEM laboratories and awarding scholarships to deserving students. Its vocational training initiative created pathways to employment for 200 young Malaysians through partnerships with local technical colleges – a fitting legacy initiative as the company enters its fourth decade.
2. Community Upliftment
Going beyond token gestures, Lumut Port implemented sustainable assistance programs including:
- Essential aid packages for 1,200 struggling families
- Healthcare support for coastal communities
- Projek Sahabat Nelayan providing fishing gear and business capital to 150 fishermen
3. Environmental Guardianship
The company achieved remarkable environmental milestones, including:
- 12 successful marine conservation awareness campaigns
- Zero chemical spill record in 2024
- Mangrove restoration projects protecting Perak’s coastline
4. Workplace Excellence
The port’s commitment to employee welfare earned five national safety awards, setting industry benchmarks for occupational health standards.
“This recognition fuels our mission to build prosperity that includes everyone,” shared Tn Hj Rusly. “As we approach our 30th anniversary, we’re reminded that sustainable growth isn’t measured in quarters, but in generations. We don’t see CSR as separate from our operations, it’s woven into every decision we make as Malaysia’s gateway port.”
Future-Focused Commitments
Building on its award-winning programs, Lumut Port reaffirmed its long-term dedication to community development. “We’re committed to deepening our impact through ongoing education support, environmental protection, and community empowerment,” stated Tn Hj Rusly. The company plans to expand its successful initiatives while exploring new partnerships to benefit Perak’s coastal communities.
CSR Malaysia Chairman Dato’ R. Rajendran remarked at the event that ESG is no longer optional—it is a strategic imperative. It drives better stakeholder engagement, reduces operational risk, and enhances long-term business value.
The gala event brought together 800 corporate leaders, including representatives from Affin Group, YTL Construction and IOI Corporation, showcasing Malaysia’s growing leadership in sustainable business practices. For Lumut Port, the award serves as both recognition of past achievements and inspiration for its next 30 years of service.
