For three decades, Lumut Port has been more than just a maritime terminal; it has been a vital partner in the growth stories of various businesses. As we celebrate our 30th anniversary, we turn the spotlight on one of our valued long-term partners, Graymont, a global leader in calcium-based solutions. Our journey together, which began even before Graymont’s acquisition of the business in 2019, is a testament to a partnership built on proximity, reliability and a shared vision for growth.
Graymont Malaysia’s Kampar plant in Perak is a key exporter of finished lime products, essential materials used in critical mining applications and various other industries. These high-value, bulk-scale shipments find their way to international markets through strategic gateways, with Lumut Port serving as a primary conduit due to one undeniable advantage: proximity.
“The distance of our plant in Kampar is closer to Lumut Port compared to other options,” says Nicholas Foo, Logistics Specialist – South East Asia at Graymont. “This gives us a natural advantage. Furthermore, Lumut Port’s specialised charter vessel facility is exactly what our customers look for, making it a win-win partnership that allows us to fulfil our clients’ needs effectively.”
The relationship, nurtured over many years, is rooted in a deep understanding of the unique demands of handling bulk materials. Unlike containerised cargo, bulk products like limestone require specific expertise, equipment and a proactive operational approach.
Reflecting on the evolution of our partnership, Nicholas highlights a standout story of collaboration and improvement. He recalls challenges with loading one-tonne jumbo bags onto vessels. Recognising the need for a more efficient and damage-free solution, the Lumut Port operations team invested in a spider crane.
“This initiative was a game-changer,” Nicholas shares. “The new equipment allowed us to load ten bags at a time instead of four, speeding up the process by 50% while perfectly maintaining the integrity of our products. It demonstrated a fantastic level of proactiveness and a genuine commitment to improving operations for their clients. This kind of effort saves us significant cost and ensures a smoother supply chain.”
At the heart of this reliability, Nicholas emphasises, are the people of Lumut Port. He praises the experienced, low-turnover operations team for their commitment and expertise.
“The operational team is committed and proactive. They initiate direct discussions to understand and meet our requirements, despite any limitations,” he notes. “In this specialised field of bulk handling, dealing with the same experienced staff over many years is invaluable. They know our products, they know how we want things done and that deep knowledge saves time and prevents issues.”
Looking to the future, Graymont sees exciting potential aligned with Lumut Port’s expansion plans, particularly the development of the Lumut Maritime Terminal 2 (LMT2). Nicholas views this expansion as crucial for accommodating larger vessels and accelerating loading times, which will directly benefit growing businesses like Graymont.
“We foresee the new terminal will be able to help us better in our business,” he says, also suggesting that Lumut Port could look towards appealing to more international players and exploring inter-transfer business models in the long term.
On the occasion of our 30th anniversary, Nicholas Foo and the team at Graymont extend their congratulations: “Congratulations and well done, Lumut Port! Keep up the good work. We look forward to the expansion taking place. Our businesses have been growing together these past many years and we see many more years to come.”
We at Lumut Port are deeply grateful for this enduring partnership and valuable feedback. We are committed to noting Graymont’s comments on infrastructure and draft limitations as we continue our journey. Our ongoing investment in LMT2 and new equipment is just the beginning. We will continue to strive for improvement, ensuring our facilities and services not only meet but exceed the expectations of our partners, supporting your growth for the next 30 years and beyond.
