[2025, February 27] Lumut Maritime Terminal Sdn Bhd (Lumut Port) has demonstrated its resilience and strategic prowess in Malaysia’s maritime industry by handling an impressive 4,717,848 million metric tonnes (MT) of cargo in 2024. While this figure reflects a slight decrease of 2,777 MT compared to 2023, the company has maintained its position as a key player in the region, thanks to its unwavering focus on innovation, customer relationships and operational excellence.
Tn Haji Rusly Tamsir, Chief Operating Officer of Lumut Port, shared his perspective on the year’s performance: “2024 was a year of consolidation for us. While we experienced a marginal dip in cargo volume, we used this opportunity to strengthen our operations and build stronger ties with our clients. Our focus remains on delivering value and ensuring that Lumut Port remains the preferred choice for maritime trade.”
Despite the slight decline in cargo volume, Lumut Port’s performance in 2024 was largely consistent with the previous year. This stability is a testament to the company’s proactive measures, including actively engaging with existing clients and pursuing new business opportunities.
The Business Development team at Lumut Port has been instrumental in establishing new connections and converting prospective clients into permanent partners. Additionally, the Operations Team has closely monitored terminal performance, ensuring seamless operations and timely deliveries.
To further enhance productivity, Lumut Port invested in new machinery and promoted its upcoming expansion projects, including Lumut Port 2, Lumut Port 3, and the LuMic (Lumut Maritime Industrial City) initiative. These projects aim to transform Lumut Port into a comprehensive maritime hub, offering world-class facilities and connectivity for local and international businesses.
Global Reach
Lumut Port handles a wide range of cargo types, including dry bulk and liquid products. The main cargoes include limestone, petroleum coke, clay, palm kernel expeller and liquid petroleum products. These materials are exported in various forms, from raw minerals like limestone and clay to processed goods such as palm oil and burn lime.
The majority of dry bulk cargo is transported in loose bulk volume, while specific materials like limestone are customised to meet buyer requirements, such as the popular 6×9 size. Other cargoes, such as copper slag, are exported in fine grain form, while coal and petroleum coke are shipped in coarse or medium chunks.
Lumut Port’s global reach extends to key markets in Japan, South Korea, China, Europe, Southeast Asia and Australasia. This extensive network underscores Lumut Port’s role as a vital gateway for international trade.
Looking ahead, Lumut Port has set an ambitious target of handling 4.9 million MT of cargo in 2025. To achieve this, the company plans to intensify its efforts in securing new business, particularly for Lumut Port 1, while also preparing for the operationalisation of Lumut Port 2 and Lumut Port 3.
Rusly emphasised the company’s commitment to growth, stating, “Our goal is not just to meet but to exceed our tonnage throughput target for 2025. By leveraging our strategic initiatives and the upcoming LuMic project, we aim to create new opportunities for our clients and strengthen Lumut Port’s position as a global maritime hub.”
Lumut Maritime Terminal’s journey reflects its resilience, strategic vision and commitment to excellence. By fostering strong partnerships, investing in infrastructure and promoting its expansion projects, Lumut Port has positioned itself as a leader in Malaysia’s maritime industry.
For potential and existing clients, Lumut Port offers more than just a terminal—it provides a gateway to growth and success. As Rusly aptly put it, “At Lumut Port, we don’t just handle cargo; we build partnerships that drive progress.”
